'Doctor Strange 2' Opens to Nearly $40 Million in International Markets
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness made $27.2 million in its first worldwide release, according to Walt Disney. The MCU sequel has begun advance-night previews in 20 markets, including France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and South Korea, as early as 3:00 p.m. today. In South Korea, it made $5.9 million, $3.8 million in Japan, and $3 million in France.
It was the second-largest opening day in Malaysia, trailing only Avengers: Endgame, and the biggest Covid-era opening days in various territories (Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore), as well as the biggest opening day in Belgium since The Rise of Skywalker. Except for China and Russia, it will virtually open worldwide.
This week, Ukraine and areas of the Middle East have been in the news.
Given the alleged reasons for not approving the last few MCU films (a brief reference to America Chavez having two mothers and/or the onscreen inclusion of a newsstand for the Epoch Times in Doctor Strange 2, too much screentime for the Statue of Liberty in Spider-Man: No Way Home), I'd argue that China's government simply does not want MCU films in their theatres and is inventing arbitrary reasons to deny clearances.
Of course, if Universal's Jurassic World: Dominion (which has been cleared for release) doesn't earn anywhere near the $225-$265 million that its predecessors did, and if Avatar: The Way of Water doesn't soar to infinity and beyond (Avatar earned $205 million in 2010 and a total of $265 million in 2011), the franchise will be doomed.
reissue brought in another $55 million in 2021), then whether Hollywood films are shown in China may become unimportant.
The comparisons are 4% lower than Spider-Man: No Way Home, +153 percent higher than Doctor Strange from late 2016, and 210 percent higher than The Batman. So far, I'd argue that Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is behaving more like an MCU event movie/mythology episode summer kick-off flick (Captain America: Civil War, which grossed $1.155 billion worldwide in 2016) than a solo MCU summer kick-off film (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which grossed $869 million worldwide in 2017).
ADSSSSSS
That's the "big question," regardless of how much it might have made in China in traditional times (over/under $125 million looks about right), and the difference between a $145 million domestic launch and a $180 million debut. If previews are included, the film has grossed $3.5 million in Mexico, $2.7 million in Brazil, a record $1.9 million in Australia, and $10.3 million in the Latin American region as a whole. If we sum everything together, we're looking at a total of little about $40 million as of Wednesday. Oh, and it took in $8.8 million in Korea on Thursday, giving it a $14.5 million two-day cume and bringing the total to about $48.2 million.
The Benedict Cumberbatch/Elizabeth Olsen/Xochitl Gomez sci-fi horror fantasy looks set for a domestic debut somewhere between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146 million) and The Last Jedi ($220 million), with solid reviews, decent buzz, and the usual prestige/anticipation bestowed on an MCU summer opener dating back to Iron Man in 2008. Even a $165 million boost from Winter Soldier ($95 million) to Civil War ($179 million) would be "just" $165 million.
